Is it Time for a House Clearance this Christmas?

December 17, 2018 | By | No Comments

As you prepare for an influx of new toys and presents to fill the home, Christmas serves as the right time for a house clearance with a removals service.

It’s always a wonderful time to give and receive new gifts to and from friends and family, but where are you going to put all of your newly loved items? If your storage cupboards and shelves are already stocked full, it might be worth having your spring clean several months early, assessing what you actually need and use, and having a house clearance.

Using a man and van removals service can help you unload the big items or take your entire collection of unwanted goods to the tip with ease; taking out the only stressful part of a household clearance.

Clearing your house before Christmas

You may even want to consider a house clearance before Christmas itself to help with your decorations preparations, finding additional room for guests, and of course, finding the perfect spot for the Christmass tree.

“A thorough clean-up can provide much-needed space for your Christmas tree”

Having a clear-out before Christmas also allows you to check on old decorations before it’s too late. It gives you and your family time to test the lights, throw out any broken or out of date decorations, and even look for something new.

A top tip for your home this Christmas

Be sure to check under the stairs and your bathroom drawers for older presents you once received but have never used. Perhaps it’s time to try and pass them on in your Secret Santa or simply throw away if you cannot recycle or give to a local charity shop.

For more information about our waste clearance services and how we can help you with your home clearance, feel free to contact us for a no obligation quote.

How to Move Heavy Objects Safely When Moving Home!

July 12, 2018 | By | No Comments

Moving house can be a stressful and exciting time, and the last thing you want to do is add more stress by injuring your back. Here is DS Movements’ 3 step guide on how to move heavy objects safely when moving home.

There can be nothing worse than a bad back. The crippling pain of every time you move it hurts, when you struggle to get out of bed it hurts and even when you sit completely still it hurts! Back pain can last for a few days, weeks or in severe cases months.

Pain in the lower back is commonly defined as lumbago. The interesting thing about lower back pain is that it can be felt anywhere along the spine, all the way from the bottom of your hips to the top of the neck. The large majority of back pain is caused by a sprain or strain, often induced via. heavy lifting; such as moving house!

DS Movements’ 3 step guide for how to move heavy objects

Step 1: Before you lift always take into account

  • Individual strength/range of movement
  • The size of the items
  • Environment (no tripping hazards or slippery floors)

Step 2: The lift

  • Keep your feet as close to the object as possible and legs wide (it is important to lift with the legs, not with the back)
  • Keep your back straight, bend at the knees down to the object and flex your hips
  • Grab a firm grip of the object, stretch the legs from the knees and keep the load close to the body
  • Lift straight up, ensuring not to twist or move the back, as this causes strain

Step 3: Setting down the object/object too heavy to move

  • Employ the reverse of step 2 techniques for placing down
  • Bend your knees, flex your hips and remember to keep the back straight
  • Alternatively, if the load is too heavy contact DS Movements for expert help

DS Movements offer a range of services to assist with heavy loads when it comes to moving home with our specialist man with a van service. So if you’re unsure, contact us today and let the experts ‘handle this’.

Moving Supplies You Need to Move Out

May 15, 2018 | By | No Comments

Think about it, you can’t just move flat or house by filling up your car with some possessions and transporting them to your new home. It’s not that easy – but it can still be a simple and straightforward process. You simply need to plan, and have the right moving supplies.

DS Movements now supply movers with packing supplies to help make moving day a whole lot easier. So, if you’re sat there waiting for moving day and thinking…

‘What do I need to help me move out?’

Look no further, here’s our rundown of moving supplies and items you need to help make the big day smooth and organised. Not only does this make the actual act of packing away easier, but it saves you the headache when unpacking too. Not only that, but it also means less trips back and forth, which is always ideal when you want to get started on turning your new house into a home.

Moving supplies

Even beginners know that a cardboard box is your staple for moving. You can store multiple items in, grouping together contents for specific rooms. They’re strong, sturdy, can carry a lot of weight and also very easy to label. Suitable for packing most possessions, we can supply you with various sizes to fit any item load..

For information regarding costs and quantities, feel free to download out information sheet.

Other moving materials

Boxes alone can’t get the job done. Use brown tape and fragile tape to held keep your boxes safe and secure, as well as writing on them the contents for desired room with a marker pen. Using bubble wrap, shrink wrap and chip shop paper groups items together and also protects them during transportation; and since boxes can’t contain everything, having some strong black sacks to carry other essentials never goes out of fashion.

Removal packages

We can also recommend looking at saving money with removal packages – designed to be your comprehensive, all-in-one, everything-you-need package for moving your 1, 2 or 3 bedroom house/flat from A to B. Packages include various sized boxes, tape, bubble wrap, strong black sacks, paper roll and more.

For an entire list of what items and packages we can provide for you, take a look at our packaging supplies page.

If you are moving house and not sure where to start, or unsure how many boxes you’ll need, feel free to contact us and we can create for you a bespoke list of everything moving supplies to ensure you’re happy and ready to start packing!

Why You Should Clear Out Your Garage

April 10, 2018 | By | No Comments

Over time, the contents of your garage can build up as it slowly becomes the dumping ground for your household junk. Plus if you’re thinking it, it probably means it’s time to take action. Here is our list of reasons why you should clear out your garage and how DS Movements can help.

It’s time to declutter your home, and the best place to start is with your garage. With Summer fast approaching, there’s no time like the present, and here’s why…

Clear outs are always needed

As simple as it sounds, it’s true. Garages are notoriously known for being the storage room where anything goes. If not maintained, things could get out of hand and before you know it, you have a fantastic space not utilised to its advantages at all. It’s fairly easy to keep putting old boxes or equipment in the garage to store for later, to save for a rainy day – but will that day ever come?

By clearing out your garage, it’ll no longer be loaded up with junk and hoarded goods; it’ll be manageable, and you’ll also be able to move around in it. If you do have items that require storage but you want to make space in your garage, we could have the storage solution for you.

Protect the car during the winter months

Whilst it may not be a primary concern right now, come the winter months we welcome harsher weather. As a result, your car or motorbike (and even bicycle) would feel the brunt of that weather. Clearing out your garage allows you to use it for what it was originally intended for – housing your vehicle.

You may need a man with a van to help you clear out your garage, and take items to your local tip. Save your car for the fun trips.

Utilise the extra space with a room

Take advantage of the space you have and add value to your property. A fun summer project could see you ‘do up’ your garage. You could turn it into a workshop, a gym, or even converted entirely into a bedroom.

Carrying out such a project will produce waste that will require efficient clearance, as we can assist you with that, as well as the initial clear out of hoarded junk and boxes.

Feel free to contact us today to discuss your plans and how we can help you turn your garage from ‘just another room’ to ‘the room’ and maximise the space in your property.

Top Tips For Packing and Moving Home

March 12, 2018 | By | No Comments

It’s important that you are organised and most of your preparation has been done come moving day. Our house removals experts provide their top tips to ensure your move is as easy and efficient as possible.

After the cathartic decluttering, you need to look at packaging your homely goods and hiring a professional removal company. Do you have everything you need to make this process as painless as possible? Do you know what to do?

Not only do you want your boxes and storage solutions organised, you’ll want them labelled clearly for ease and the contents inside safe. With that said, here is our quick guide of things to keep in mind when you decide it’s time to do business with a home removals service:

  • Plan ahead, as packing always takes longer than expected
  • Take into account items of furniture that will require dismantling
  • Work out a budget for moving, and be conscious of the going hourly rates
  • Gather important paperwork together for the old and new home; along with a pen and notebook
  • Ensure every member of the family has an overnight bag prepared as if they were going on holiday

What materials you need for packing when moving home

You don’t actually need too many materials to ensure moving house goes smoothly. So long as you have the below listed at your disposal, your move will be smooth and easy:

Above all else, you will want boxes. It’s wise to purchase new boxes rather than re-use old ones that friends and family may send your way or ones you’ve picked up from the local corner shop. You need to be sure they’re of good quality cardboard, sturdy and can hold weight. It’s also ideal to make sure they are of a good size to help with fitting as much as possible in them, it’ll also help with stacking up the van. The man with a van service will also thank you.

Marker pen

A thick black marker pen like a Sharpie will do you wonders for labelling your boxes clear and concisely. It’s wise to write on the same spot of each box so they can be easily identified. You won’t need labels or stickers if you are using new boxes.

Be it brown parcel tape, a thick roll of sellotape or even duct tape, a roll or two of tape is vital for packing up your boxes and ensuring they do not open in transit.

Packaging can come in many forms, and it depends on your preference or availability. We recommend a mixture of bubble wrap and newspapers/scrunched up paper, as we have found that these work best. If you are on a budget, using your old plastic bags also works well as a good ‘box filler’.

Prepare a box of essentials

Our last tip is a trick we’ve picked up over the years that helps out many first-time home movers. Pack a small box of essentials, filled with items you may need at the drop of a hat. The contents is based around you and how you live day-to-day, but suggestions of its contents can be toiletries, phone and laptop chargers, towels and washcloths, a first aid kit, a tool box, baby and pet supplies, canned food with cooking equipment for a quick meal, and of course the kettle and emergency stash of tea bags.

Be sure to put this box in the van last so it can easily be accessed at any time.

For an entire list of what items and packages we can provide for you, take a look at our packaging supplies page.

Checklist for Hiring a Removals Company

February 12, 2018 | By | No Comments

There are multiple removal companies out there, mostly appearing to offer identical services so it’s no surprise at all that finding the right one for you can prove tricky. DS Movements are here to make your decision easier.

The moving process can always seem overwhelming, we know choosing a reputable removals company can be a long process, so we wanted to break it down for you by highlighting some key points to look out for.

Here is a brief checklist for hiring the right removals company.

  • Reputation – Before you start booking your removals company, stop for one moment. Have you had a look at their website or social media profiles to check customer reviews? One of the quickest ways to ascertain the reliability of a removal company is by searching online, seeing what information you can find about the company. We all know that reading reviews can sometimes be misleading so do bear in mind that one bad review may not be a true reflection of the company.
  • Personable Approach – On par with the first point, the level of service that you receive when reaching out to your removals company should be a friendly, trustworthy and professional approach. Anything less than that and we advise you to avoid them at all costs, you want your moving process to be as relaxed and hassle-free as possible, so it’s no good having to deal with an unprofessional company. Although often booking online can seem the easiest way, we would always recommend to also get in touch with them on the phone.
  • Price – Of course we all want the best service for the best price. But it is nothing new that the cheapest company may not always be the best one as you may lose service level for cost. When possible, it is often a good idea to get a few quotes and then make your selection on the service offered against the price.

DS Movements strive to make your moving process a positive, professional and relaxed experience, that’s why our customers are more than happy after using our man and van service.

So why not get in touch for a competitive quote today.
