What Is the Public Transport in Cambridge Really Like?

March 15, 2023 | By |

Whether you’re planning to move to the city of Cambridge or just visit, it’s important to get your head around the city’s public transport offering before you go. Like many cities, Cambridge isn’t the most car-friendly of places. So, even if you’re a confident driver, you may prefer to use public transport in Cambridge to avoid the hassle of parking and negotiating tight, busy streets!

With all of the above in mind, you’d expect Cambridge’s public transport to be top-tier. Happily, it doesn’t disappoint. Here’s a quick round-up of the city’s most popular modes of transport.

Park and Ride

Operated by Stagecoach, Cambridge Park and Ride is perhaps the easiest and most convenient way to see the sights of Cambridge (if you arrive by car, that is). Simply park up in the facility’s giant parking area and walk into the bus station, which clearly displays information about the different routes on offer and when the next buses are due to arrive.

Get your ticket, hop on a bus and enjoy the city. Then, when you’re done, return to the park and ride facility. No need to worry about parking your car or finding your way around!

Guided Busway

Another Stagecoach-operated service, the Guided Busway connects Cambridge to Huntingdon and St Ives. Because the buses run on a purpose-built, dedicated busway (not on the public road), journey times are consistent and predictable. If you need to get into the city from Huntingdon or St Ives, this is a no-brainer!

Arriving by train

There are a number of regular services to Cambridge from cities across the UK, including London, Birmingham and many further afield. The best way to find out which services are running to and from your town is by visiting the National Rail Enquiries website.

Taking to the Water

Cambridge is synonymous with punting, so why not give it a try yourself? A number of local companies offer affordable transport along the river Cam, with some – like Scudamores – even providing guided tours on the water. If you want serene, you can’t beat punting.
