How To Choose A Reliable Moving Company

May 1, 2019 | By | No Comments

When moving house it is essential that you choose a reliable moving company. The last thing you want is to be sat waiting on your doorstep surrounded by all your belongings in boxes, only to find out that the company you chose can no longer help you.

However, there are lots of removals companies in Ely, all of which claim to be great at what they do. But how can you choose a reliable house removals company?

Local Knowledge

When choosing a removals company that you can rely on, make sure they work locally. You need a company that knows where you live and where you are moving to. By choosing one of the local moving companies in Ely you are likely to know where they are based, so it is less likely they are a fraudulent business. They will also know the local area which will help reduce the stress of your house move.

We would recommend that you get prices and quotes from a number of businesses to see the average price you can expect to pay. Make sure you don’t base your decision purely on price as the cheapest one may be the cheapest because they offer a lower quality of removals service or do not have the correct insurance in place.

Feedback & Reviews

Take the time to look online at the real testimonials, reviews and feedback from people that have moved homes with them. While there may be great testimonials on their website, check out any online reviews or reviews on social media to see previous customer’s experiences. If you can see that they have lots of happy customers then it is more likely the moving service you receive, you will be happy with.

Deposit Requests

It is unlikely for a removals company to ask for more than 20% as a deposit. If you are asked for more than this we would recommend that you double check the company online. In some cases, customers have been asked for a 50% deposit and then they have been let down on the day. We have also heard of cases where a removals business has asked for more money on the day and held the customers items hostage in their van.

If you’re looking for a trustworthy removals company in Ely that you can count on on, DS Movements will ensure your house move is as easy and stress-free as possible. Get in touch with our professionals today on 07399 424632.

Are You Moving Office?

April 8, 2019 | By | No Comments

Here at DS Movements we offer a professional service of office removals in Cambridge. We have helped many businesses move to or from Cambridge Science Park as it is a popular, well-known and easily accessible business park in Cambridge.

However, no matter how well located your business is, or your business is going to be, office removals can be very stressful. That’s why we are here to help ensure your move runs as smoothly as possible.

It is highly recommended that you book a professional to help with your office move. Moving office is a logistical nightmare and while your team may be amazing at what they do for you and your business, they are not experienced in office removals.

By employing professional office removal specialists you can rest assured that your furniture, files, paperwork, computers and more will be moved safely and securely from one office to another. You can even arrange for your office to be relocated at the weekend or out of office hours to cause minimal disruption to your employees, customers and the business.

Before moving into your new space make sure you have thought about the layout of the new office. You need to think about where desks will go, who will go in which office, what will greet visitors and similar. By putting together a plan the move will become easier and less stressful for everyone. It also means your team of removal professionals can put everything in the right place for you in your new location.

Remember to tell your suppliers that you are moving offices too, especially if you get regular deliveries from them. Your clients, customers and utilities suppliers will also need to know your new address so take the time to check through all your contacts and make sure they know you are relocating in advance of your move.

You will also need to update your business address on your website, in your email signatures, in your invoices, your letterheads and anything else where your address can be seen. These are things that can often be forgotten so make sure you set yourself a reminder when you have moved in, to check everything has been changed!

If you’re looking for specialists in office removals in Cambridge then please call us now on 07399 424632. We would be happy to help your business take that next step!

House Packing Tips

March 21, 2019 | By | No Comments

In this article, we will discuss the best tips we can provide our customers when preparing to move all of your possessions, to a new house.

Having the correct materials is by far the most important thing for a stress-free pack. For an average home we recommend at least the following:

  • Double walled boxes in 2 sizes. It is important to have large and smaller boxes, smaller boxes for heavy items large for lighter bulkier items. Double wall are far superior to the weaker cheap single walled boxes.
  • Strong packing tape – cheap tape is often not sticky enough to create a solid box
  • Packing paper – great for wrapping items but also for padding out boxes
  • Bubble wrap
  • Marker pens

Other Materials Can Include

  • Mattress covers
  • Wardrobe boxes
  • Wine boxes
  • Shrink wrap
  • Extra thick black sacks
  • Labels
  • Cool box for fridge / freezer
  • Television boxes
  • Sofa covers

Packing Room by Room

You want to go around room by room and pack away all non-essential items, leaving the essentials to the day or 2 before you move.

Labelling all boxes clearly either with a marker or labels is very important for a stress-free offload. Thinking of your new home, create names for each room so when you arrive on move day you can explain which room is which and the removal staff can unload without having to ask you.

  • Wardrobe items should be transferred into wardrobe boxes or taped up in bags. All clothes can be loaded into boxes or bags
  • Bedding into bags or box
  • Personal belongings / small electrical into boxes
  • Label everything bedroom 1/2/3 and so on for easy offload at your new property

All liquids to be packed into bags with the lids closed and then into a box so they stay upright to avoid any leaks.

By far the most time-consuming room of the home.

  • Wrap all utensils and cutlery in packing paper and put them into strong boxes. Watch for sharp knives, you can buy blade protectors or knife blocks can be wrapped complete in shrink wrap and put in a box
  • Plates, glasses and mugs can all be wrapped in packing paper and stood in a box, try to be uniform with sizes so you can load the boxes in rows using more packing paper between layers
  • Pots and pans can be stacked but you want packing paper between them to avoid scratches
  • Microwaves and other appliances can be bubble wrapped and boxed with packing paper to secure them

Living / Dining Room

  • Pack all small items from draws and cupboards into boxes again using packing paper to fill any voids
  • If you have the original box for electrical equipment like televisions then perfect, if not wrap them in bubble wrap
  • Small plants can be boxed upright with packing paper to stop them moving
  • Wrap pictures and mirrors in bubble wrap

Garage and Garden

  • Pack smaller items into boxes
  • All mowers and strimmers etc should be cleaned and drained of fuel
  • Bikes may require packing if they are valuable, speak with your mover if you require additional protection for your bike

Preparing Boxes

All boxes should be the correct way up if marked on there. Start by tightly taping one end of the box, use 2 pieces of tape, one in the middle first then one over each edge of the first bit for extra strength.

Turn the box over and you can start loading, if you feel something maybe too sharp for the edge or bottom of the box place some packing paper in first to protect it.

Make sure you can tape the top of the box down so it is flat and level. Clearly label the boxes with which room and rough contents of what it has. This makes it easy for your movers and also yourself when it comes to unpacking.

At DS Movements we can offer a full pack and wrap service, we come in the day before your move and go around room by room completing your pack. We include material prices within the quote for packing.

We also provide packaging materials for you to buy at great rates should you prefer to pack yourself.

Start Your Spring Clean Early This Year

March 5, 2019 | By | No Comments

With the recent Marie Kondo and her “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up” show on Netflix, more and more people are looking at how they can tidy their homes so they too can experience some life-changing magic.

However, sometimes it is not that easy. As specialists of removals in Ely, we know all too well how many things people can keep in areas of their homes for months and even years. In many cases, they have forgotten how much is in their loft until they come to move house.

In this blog post we thought we would share some top tips for starting your spring clean early – ready for your house move. These tips will enable you to tidy up your home, and hopefully experience that Kondo effect.

Clearing out and tidying up your home is a huge project in itself. So start by choosing just one room. Even if you just do one room a month it will still make a massive impact on your home, your available space and when you need to move home!

You’ll need to have 3 boxes or bags in the room. One is for things you want to keep. One is for things that you want to donate to friends or to a charity shop. The last is for things that need to go in the bin.
As you pick things up you need to ask yourself if you have used it, worn it or even looked at it in the past year. You also need to ask yourself if you love it, or it brings happy memories. If it’s not been used in the last year and it doesn’t bring happy memories then it can’t go in the keep box. There are absolutely no exceptions!

Make sure you sort out your storage space too. It is so easy to stick things in the back of the shed, garage, loft and cupboard hidden in the spare room. Things that you think might be useful or things that you might use. In reality, they are just taking up valuable space and have done since you put them in there 5 years ago. Moving home is the perfect opportunity to get rid of the clutter and the things you kept ‘just in case’.

As experts in Removals in Ely we know it can be hard to get rid of things, but we also know how much new and bigger homes can cost but bigger garages, lofts and storage space is soon filled up. If you tidy up your home, de-clutter and clear out in the right way, you’ll feel the benefit of your new house sooner rather than later. Contacts us now to find out more about Removals Ely and how we can help you. Clearing your home now will make your house move in Ely easier in the future.

Is it Time for a House Clearance this Christmas?

December 17, 2018 | By | No Comments

As you prepare for an influx of new toys and presents to fill the home, Christmas serves as the right time for a house clearance with a removals service.

It’s always a wonderful time to give and receive new gifts to and from friends and family, but where are you going to put all of your newly loved items? If your storage cupboards and shelves are already stocked full, it might be worth having your spring clean several months early, assessing what you actually need and use, and having a house clearance.

Using a man and van removals service can help you unload the big items or take your entire collection of unwanted goods to the tip with ease; taking out the only stressful part of a household clearance.

Clearing your house before Christmas

You may even want to consider a house clearance before Christmas itself to help with your decorations preparations, finding additional room for guests, and of course, finding the perfect spot for the Christmass tree.

“A thorough clean-up can provide much-needed space for your Christmas tree”

Having a clear-out before Christmas also allows you to check on old decorations before it’s too late. It gives you and your family time to test the lights, throw out any broken or out of date decorations, and even look for something new.

A top tip for your home this Christmas

Be sure to check under the stairs and your bathroom drawers for older presents you once received but have never used. Perhaps it’s time to try and pass them on in your Secret Santa or simply throw away if you cannot recycle or give to a local charity shop.

For more information about our waste clearance services and how we can help you with your home clearance, feel free to contact us for a no obligation quote.

How to Move Heavy Objects Safely When Moving Home!

July 12, 2018 | By | No Comments

Moving house can be a stressful and exciting time, and the last thing you want to do is add more stress by injuring your back. Here is DS Movements’ 3 step guide on how to move heavy objects safely when moving home.

There can be nothing worse than a bad back. The crippling pain of every time you move it hurts, when you struggle to get out of bed it hurts and even when you sit completely still it hurts! Back pain can last for a few days, weeks or in severe cases months.

Pain in the lower back is commonly defined as lumbago. The interesting thing about lower back pain is that it can be felt anywhere along the spine, all the way from the bottom of your hips to the top of the neck. The large majority of back pain is caused by a sprain or strain, often induced via. heavy lifting; such as moving house!

DS Movements’ 3 step guide for how to move heavy objects

Step 1: Before you lift always take into account

  • Individual strength/range of movement
  • The size of the items
  • Environment (no tripping hazards or slippery floors)

Step 2: The lift

  • Keep your feet as close to the object as possible and legs wide (it is important to lift with the legs, not with the back)
  • Keep your back straight, bend at the knees down to the object and flex your hips
  • Grab a firm grip of the object, stretch the legs from the knees and keep the load close to the body
  • Lift straight up, ensuring not to twist or move the back, as this causes strain

Step 3: Setting down the object/object too heavy to move

  • Employ the reverse of step 2 techniques for placing down
  • Bend your knees, flex your hips and remember to keep the back straight
  • Alternatively, if the load is too heavy contact DS Movements for expert help

DS Movements offer a range of services to assist with heavy loads when it comes to moving home with our specialist man with a van service. So if you’re unsure, contact us today and let the experts ‘handle this’.

Moving Supplies You Need to Move Out

May 15, 2018 | By | No Comments

Think about it, you can’t just move flat or house by filling up your car with some possessions and transporting them to your new home. It’s not that easy – but it can still be a simple and straightforward process. You simply need to plan, and have the right moving supplies.

DS Movements now supply movers with packing supplies to help make moving day a whole lot easier. So, if you’re sat there waiting for moving day and thinking…

‘What do I need to help me move out?’

Look no further, here’s our rundown of moving supplies and items you need to help make the big day smooth and organised. Not only does this make the actual act of packing away easier, but it saves you the headache when unpacking too. Not only that, but it also means less trips back and forth, which is always ideal when you want to get started on turning your new house into a home.

Moving supplies

Even beginners know that a cardboard box is your staple for moving. You can store multiple items in, grouping together contents for specific rooms. They’re strong, sturdy, can carry a lot of weight and also very easy to label. Suitable for packing most possessions, we can supply you with various sizes to fit any item load..

For information regarding costs and quantities, feel free to download out information sheet.

Other moving materials

Boxes alone can’t get the job done. Use brown tape and fragile tape to held keep your boxes safe and secure, as well as writing on them the contents for desired room with a marker pen. Using bubble wrap, shrink wrap and chip shop paper groups items together and also protects them during transportation; and since boxes can’t contain everything, having some strong black sacks to carry other essentials never goes out of fashion.

Removal packages

We can also recommend looking at saving money with removal packages – designed to be your comprehensive, all-in-one, everything-you-need package for moving your 1, 2 or 3 bedroom house/flat from A to B. Packages include various sized boxes, tape, bubble wrap, strong black sacks, paper roll and more.

For an entire list of what items and packages we can provide for you, take a look at our packaging supplies page.

If you are moving house and not sure where to start, or unsure how many boxes you’ll need, feel free to contact us and we can create for you a bespoke list of everything moving supplies to ensure you’re happy and ready to start packing!
